Why a fume extraction arm outperforms a canopy hood in welding & industrial applications

The biggest difference is where the fumes are captured.

Fume Extraction Arm: Captures contaminants directly at the arc—before they rise into the breathing zone.
Canopy/Hood: Captures fumes after they’ve passed the welder’s face and risen toward the ceiling or booth opening.

Because hot weld fumes naturally rise, canopy systems depend on thermal lift and room air currents. Any cross-draft, fan, or open bay door can disrupt performance. A fume arm positioned 6–12 inches from the arc captures fumes immediately and consistently.

In many cases, those numbers are tied to motor ratings , not the airflow available at the hood where fume capture actually occurs.

The Problem With Marketing Motor CFM

A motor may be capable of moving a high volume of air under ideal conditions, but real-world extraction systems introduce losses at every step:

Long extraction arms
Multiple joints and bends
Filters and internal components
Hood design

Once those factors are in play, the airflow at the hood can drop significantly. In practice, many high-cost mobile extractors with large arms end up delivering airflow that sits right at the minimum capture threshold, often around 2,000 FPM .

Recapping our Trip to ACTE CareerTech VISION Trade Show 2025

This past December, the IAP team packed up our gear and headed to Nashville for the ACTE CareerTech VISION trade show. If you’ve ever been to an ACTE event, you know the energy is on another level—it’s a massive gathering of people who are genuinely passionate about vocational training and getting the next generation ready for the workforce.

For IAP Air Products, this show felt especially productive. We set up our booth with one goal in mind: showing educators that "shop air" doesn’t have to be a health hazard. We brought along a heavy-hitting lineup of equipment to show exactly how we do it.

The star of the show for many of the welding instructors was our Weld Shell Welding Booth paired with our Fume Arm Filtration unit . It’s one thing to see a photo of a booth in a catalog, but seeing the combo in person—feeling the build quality and seeing how the arm moves—really makes it click. What Size Fume Extraction Arm Do I Need?

When choosing a fume extraction arm, it’s easy to assume that a larger arm will capture more fumes and provide better performance. In reality, that’s not always the case. Oversizing your arm can actually lead to poor performance, inefficient capture, and wasted energy. The key is to match the arm size to the application, workspace, and airflow requirements.

Fume extraction arms are typically available in 4", 6", and 8" diameters. Each size is designed to move a specific amount of air (CFM) and cover a certain capture area. But the larger the diameter, the more airflow (and suction power) your fan or fume extractor needs to maintain proper capture velocity.

4" Fume Arm : Usually designed for around 300–450 CFM
6" Fume Arm : Typically operates at 600–850 CFM
8" Fume Arm : Can require 1000–1200+ CFM

If your extraction unit or duct system can’t provide that airflow, the larger arm won’t capture effectively — even though it looks more capable.

Standard Welding Booths and Average Welding

For standard 4x4 or 5x5 welding booths, maintenance shops at factories, and most school welding programs, a 4" fume extraction arm is often the ideal choice. These environments typically involve welding smaller parts or short-duration welds, and the compact design of a 4" arm makes it easy to position within tighter spaces.

A properly sized 4" arm operating around 400 CFM can effectively capture fumes without overpowering the space or requiring a large fan. In fact, smaller booths can struggle to accommodate the reach and bulk of a 6" or 8" arm.

Moderate Welding or Grinding in Medium Booths

For more demanding environments — such as industrial welding departments that run multiple shifts or schools with 6x6 welding booths — a 6" fume extraction arm is often the right fit. These arms move a higher volume of air to handle frequent or continuous welding while maintaining strong capture performance.

A 6" arm paired with an appropriate extractor (usually around 700–800 CFM) provides great coverage for small- to medium-sized parts without being excessive. It’s a solid middle ground between mobility, reach, and performance for everyday industrial use.

Large Workpieces or High-Volume Production Areas

An 8" arm may be justified for large workpieces, heavy fabrication, or multi-operator setups, but these cases are the exception rather than the rule. An 8" arm demands significant airflow — often over 1000 CFM — to maintain capture velocity. Unless your system is specifically designed for that volume, it will underperform.

Why Bigger Isn’t Always Better

A common issue we see is customers installing 6" or 8" arms in small welding booths. The result? The capture efficiency drops because the airflow velocity through the arm slows down. Even though the duct is larger, the same fan or fume extractor now has to move much more air — which it usually can’t.

In short, oversizing the arm leads to weak suction and poor capture, especially at the hood where it matters most.

A Balanced Approach

A properly sized arm will always outperform a poorly sized one. For instance, a well-balanced 4" arm moving 400 CFM will perform far better than an 8" arm operating below its designed airflow. The size should match the airflow capacity of your system — not just the space you have available.

When your arm, fan, and workspace are properly matched, you’ll achieve consistent capture efficiency, easier positioning, and longer filter life.

Welding Booth Product Details

IAP Air Products is a leading supplier of welding booths that are designed for welding schools and technical teaching facilities. We often get calls asking for their specifications. They are non-powered and can be purchased individually or in groups. In groups they are able to share side panels, which help reduce costs. They are three-piece construction - 2 side panels, 1 back panel, 14-gauge thickness, and the panels have a standard open area of 26" below wall. The frame and brace 1.5" square tube 11-gauge.

Adjustable feet are provided for leveling, and a fixed rear shelf (unpainted) that is 20"D x 34"H is provided as standard. A welding curtain rod is also provided as standard, but the welding curtain (and welding curtain hooks) can either be bought from us at additional costs or through your local welding gas supplier. The standard welding booth color is IAP Blue (RAL 5010) which is powder-coated. A welding fume extraction arm connection bracket, and welding fume extraction arm can also be provided as options at additional costs.

What are the main areas of activity of the company?

While we offer a variety of products for different solutions, our main area of expertise revolves around fume extraction arms. What’s the news about new products?

We don’t want to give too much away here, but we do have a few new products up our sleeves that we are getting ready to release to our customers in the U.S Market. Partially due to customer request and seeing how overpriced our competitors were in the market, we decided to leap headfirst into the welding booth market (which can actually be slightly different than the welding fume extraction market) and have seen a lot of success. There’s no doubt that source capture is the best way to remove any fume, mist, or dust particulate problems that you may be facing. While there are various types of hoods to use for source capture, welding fume extraction arms are an increasingly popular choice for this. ATEX Rated arms are very expensive but are worth the cost (and most likely required) for safety if you are working in an explosive environment.

Creating Safer Environments for Fire Fighters

The Problem

Some of the bravest people in our society today are the men and women who serve as fire fighters. Because of their courage, there have been countless homes, valuable possessions and (most importantly) lives saved. We owe these incredible fire fighters a great deal of gratitude. Unfortunately, a great number of fire fighters are losing their lives due to a cause that most people don’t know.

According to a study by the IAFF , from 2015 – 2020, 75% of the fire fighters that were added to the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial died, not from fighting fires, but rather from occupational cancer. While it’s hard to believe that most fire fighters’ deaths don’t come from the riskier aspects of their jobs, it’s even harder to believe that a major cause for their cancer comes while they are at the safest place during their jobs, the fire station.

According to an article posted on Fire Engineering (also reposted by the CDC) by Baldwin TN; Hales TR; Niemeier MT, they write, “firefighters can be exposed to diesel exhaust for a significant portion of their shifts. Scientific evidence suggests an association between lung cancer and occupational exposure to diesel exhaust emissions.” Every time the fire trucks are started or driven into the fire station, diesel exhaust is being released into the building and traveling throughout the bays and into their living quarters. Unknowingly, this has been a massive problem for many years now. On the bright side, in recent years there has been an even bigger push to put protection in place to put in capture exhaust systems. According to FEMA , as of 9/21/21, FEMA has awarded 2,200 grants to Fire Stations, totaling a whopping $710 million given through grants!

Source Capture Systems

Since the beginning of controlling diesel exhaust in fire stations, the primary method of capturing the exhaust was through a source capture system. These systems typically consist of a nozzle that attached to the tailpipe, high temperature hose that attached to the nozzle, ductwork that attached to the hose, and the ductwork that attached to a fan that blows all of the exhaust outside. Often times, these systems would have Motorized Hose Reels that would coil the hose upwards and downwards depending on when needed. While this all sounds like a lot (and it is), the majority, if not all, of the cost was covered by FEMA through the AFG Grant, if the fire station met certain criteria. However, these systems come with a list of PRO’s and CON’s

While upfront costs are typically covered, the Fire Stations are typically left to deal with large maintenance costs (Replacing deteriorated hoses, damaged nozzles, parts for hose reels and fans, etc.)
When you remove the exhaust to outside, you’re also pulling your good air along with it. This can put quite a bit of strain on your HVAC system to keep up with putting warm air/cool air back into your building.

A Great Solution!

However, in more recent years there has been a big push towards using a “hose-less exhaust system”, more commonly called an ambient air cleaning system. These systems have become very popular due to their:

- Low upfront cost

- Ease and low costs of maintenance,

- Lack of work needed by the firemen,

- Ability to recirculate air back into the room

These systems are becoming so popular that not only are new fire stations implementing them, but fire stations that have relied on their source capture system are now switching to ambient air cleaners!

Instead of exhausting the diesel contaminants into the outside air like the source capture systems do, the ambient air cleaners are more environmentally friendly! These units suspend from the ceiling or wall and pull the air through a series of filters. Again, this is a great benefit because you’re not losing any of your warm/cool air, which means no expensive make-up air units are needed!

How do these units turn on?

While there are multiple ways to turn these on, we want to make sure it’s as easy as possible for the fire fighters so that their focus can remain on the emergencies they are getting ready to face. The most common way to turn on the IAP Fire Station Air Cleaner starts with making sure the bay door openers have a 24 DC Signal Output. If your bay door opener has this, then the hardest part is out of the way! IAP then supplies a custom control panel that acts as the communicator between the garage door opener and the units. Basically, when the garage doors go up for the truck to leave/return, a signal is then sent for the Fire Station Air Cleaners to turn on and start doing their job. The control panel can be programmed for the units to run on a timer that can be adjusted at any time. You can also use the control panel to manually turn the units on/off individually or as a whole. Each fire stations’ set up will be a little different.

How often will I need to change filters?

Of course, this will vary based how much they are used but a good rule of thumb is:

- Prefilters need to be changed out quarterly

- Bag filters need to be changed out semi-annually

- Gas-phased filters need to be changed every year

How many units are needed?

The answer to this will vary from station to station due to the different layouts so we highly recommend reaching out so that we can review each situation.

5 Things to know about Welding Fume Extraction Arms for effective extraction of welding fumes

1) Flexibility/Ease of Operation

Safety equipment needs to be flexible and easy to use to ensure acceptance by the welder. Companies can install safeguards, but they are useless unless they are used. Therefore, flexible source capture is needed with ease of operation, fast and simple adjustment. 2) Self-supporting:

When the welder sets the fume extraction arm to his comfortable working position, it needs to remain in position. Also, since the arm is self-supporting it means that the workplace is free from trip hazards and clutter. The support spring (hanging fume arms) or gas shock (standing fume arms), and friction discs in the IAP fume arms allow for easy adjustment and the fume arm to be self-supporting. The fume arms are mounted using the hanging mount bracket supplied.

3) Range of motion

The fume extraction arm should have plenty of motion. The IAP arms come equipped with a rotating base that allows for 355-degree movement of the fume arm. The hood connected to the extraction arm aids in flexibility with its grab handle that extends all the way around the hood. As a result, the welder is easily able to set the extraction arm in any position he decides.

4) Variable lengths

Depending on your application, you may require different lengths of reach for your welding fume extraction arm. The IAP arms are available in different lengths. The fume arms are typically between 7’ and 14’ long. The correct fume arm length should be selected for optimal positioning on the worktable. If additional length is required, extension booms are available in 10’ and 20’ lengths.

5) Variable operating options

A welding fume extraction arm needs to be capable of working in a wide variety of working environments. This could be welding booths, over individual worktables, mounted to extension booms or walls/ceilings mounted. Ductulator Part 2 : How Much CFM Do I Need?

We often get asked, “How much CFM do I need in my welding fume extraction arm?” We thought we would take the time to show and explain where we get our MINIMUM CFM requirements from.

When it comes to calculating CFM needed at the hood, it’s a relatively easy process. The first thing you’ll need is a “Ductulator” or “Slide Rule”. If you don’t have one and would like one, reach out to us and we would be more than happy to provide!

Now, you’ll need to determine what diameter fume arm you are working with. The most popular diameter fume extraction arm for welding applications is a 6” diameter so that’s what we’ll use in this example.

Here is the information we now know:

Application: Welding

Diameter of our Welding Fume Extraction Arm: 6”

Velocity Needed to Capture Contaminant: 2000 – 2500 FPM

Here at IAP Air Products, we never want to do the bare minimum. When we are sizing our 6” diameter arms, we typically account for around 600 CFM, as most smaller fans are already rated for this.

How to calculate duct work sizes for welding fume extraction layouts and fan CFM requirements

1) Use the back of the Ductulator

3) Start with the first fume arm in line (3”). Then work your way to the last arm. Start with 3” duct work since you have a 3” arm.

Note: You can use odd duct diameters at 3", 5", 7", and maybe 9". Typical to stay to even afterwards, unless customer wants odd.

10) At the fan inlet the duct work is 8”

11) The arm cfm is:

a. 3” – 170 cfm (1.5 wg)

b. 6” – 600 cfm (1.5 wg)

c. Total = 170+170+600 = 940 cfm

The fan would need to be more than 940 cfm

How to Protect Your Employees

In today’s work environment it is more import than ever to recognize our employees as our most valuable assets. This should include their health and safety. If your current manufacturing process is creating weld fumes, then you are creating a hazard for your employees. The best solution to control this is using a source capture system. This utilizes hoods and/or hoses to extract the harmful particulates at or near the generation source.

This source capture of welding fumes also prevents contamination from migrating to other parts of the facility and putting other people/employees at risk as well. Throughout the years, source capture has proven time and time again to be the most effective means of capturing harmful fumes. Extraction arms / snorkels are the most used product to accomplish this.

In some applications it is not possible to have these wall mounted welding fume extraction arms located next to the generation source. A possible solution for this is a mobile welding fume extraction unit that supports a fume extraction arm. The picture shows an example of a welder working on a large section of pipe. In this case it is not possible to have a wall or stanchion mounted fume extraction arm. The mobile extraction unit is portable, self-contained and can be easily moved into position.

How to calculate the required CFM of a weld/fume hood

Here at IAP, we get asked many questions about welding fume extraction. Recently, we have had several questions regarding how to calculate the required CFM of a welding fume extraction hood so we thought we would take the time and share an explanation!

Units:

Fume Hood Airflow - Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM)

Face Velocity - Feet Per Minute (FPM)

Calculation Explained:

The calculation for the CFM of a fume hood is obtained by multiplying the FACE OPENING (window of the fume hood) and the FACE VELOCITY.

The FACE OPENING value is the maximal open Width x Height for your fume hood, while FACE VELOCITY references the usual FPM for a typical capturing process. For instance, the typical FPM for capturing welding fume extraction is 50-100 while the typical process for grinding is 500-2000 or even higher! This information can be found on the back of Slides Rules (Ductulators). The main picture shows one of these Ductulators. IAP can provide one, call Joshua and he can arrange to have one sent out.

Note: For this sample calculation we are using a hood which is 22" wide by 12" long being used to capture welding fume extraction. We will use 100 FPM for the FACE VELOCITY since we are capturing welding fumes.

FACE OPENING Calculation:

22” x 12” = 264 square inches. Divide this by 144 to get square feet.

264 ÷ 144 = 1.83 square foot opening

You would now multiply this area measurement (1.83 square feet) by your desired FACE VELOCITY, in this case 100 FPM and that will give you the CFM requirements you need.

1.8 square feet x 100 FPM = 180 CFM

So in this case, you would need your exhaust fan to be able to draw 180 CFM.

**** If your Fume Hood is already in square feet (i.e 2’x1’) you can simply multiply 2x1 = 2. You would then multiply 2 x 100 FPM to get 200 CFM needed. However, if your Fume Hood dimensions are not in square feet, it’s best to convert both dimensions to inches and proceed as the above example instructs****

How to provide welding safety in schools and training facilities

During the welding process, toxic gases, fumes, and sparks are produced. These air contaminants are so small that you cannot see them, and they do not produce a smell. Because of their small size, the contaminants are easily inhaled and can become trapped in the lungs, targeting other parts of the body. For this reason, it is important to capture weld fumes/particulates at the source. This can be done using a welding fume extraction system. A Guide To Source Capture

No matter what your current manufacturing process is, if you have a problem with fumes that create a hazard for your employees then the best solution to control this is using a source capture system. So, what exactly is “Source Capture”? Source capture involves utilizing hoods and/or hoses to extract the harmful particulates at or near the generation source. What Sizes Do Extraction Arms Come in?

While the size of the welding fume extraction arm you need greatly depends on application and surface area needed to cover (as well as fan capabilities), you’ll find extractions arms that range from 3” – 8” diameter and 3’ – 14’ in length. These variety of arms will also have CFM requirements that range from 350 CFM – 1000 CFM. While extraction arms have a typical range of 3” – 8” diameter, you’ll find that the hood on these arms are typically much bigger than the arm diameter. This is so that you can have a wider source capture coverage. Most extraction arms on the market also have pivoting and bending capabilities. This especially come in handy when needing to move the arm out of the way at the end of day.

How Do I Install an Extraction Arm?

Each welding fume extraction arm varies from manufacturer to manufacturer when it comes to installation as each product is different. However, most manufacturers have options for either hanging your arm from a wall or ceiling or an option for mounting your arm in a standing position on a workbench / table. You’ll find that extraction arms are typically shipped with all of the hardware necessary for the arm; however, some arms require quite a bit of assembly before actually installing. Once the arm in mounted, you’ll need to make sure your duct work is ran from the collector or fan to your arm. Most companies will hire Mechanical Contractors for this portion of the job.

What Should I Look for When Purchasing an Extraction Arm?

When searching for a welding fume extraction arm, you must first know what your application calls for. There are applications where only certain materials can be used (such as stainless steel) and there are applications where there are extreme dangers of explosiveness where only an ATEX rated arm can be used. However, for general purposes we recommend an extraction arm that:

· Is durable, robust, and virtually maintenance free

· Is self-supporting with smooth, low-friction control

· Is flexible in all directions and simple to position

· Allows rotation of up to 350 degrees

· Comes pre-assembled and easy to install

· Equipped with an internal damper near the hood

Optional Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization (NPBI)

IAP is offering a new system for our Ambient units. This is a proven patented technology that delivers clean indoor air that is safe and healthy.

Our Ambient Air Cleaners now have an option to add NPBI technology. These ionizers can be installed at the factory as an option on the “clean air side” of any of our A-1100 or A-2500 units. The filters in our units will continue to provide “active” filtration of the dirty air passing through them, while the ionizer projects ions via the exhaust air to provide “passive” air filtration outside of the unit. The ions produced travel within the air stream into the occupied spaces, cleaning the air everywhere the ions travel, even in spaces unseen.

The Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization (NPBI) technology is UL approved.

How it works

The NPBI technology works to safely clean the air inside your building. The patented technology uses an electronic charge to create a plasma field filled with a high concentration of + and – ions that replicate those commonly found in nature. As these ions travel with the air stream they attach to particles, pathogens and gases/odors. As the ions attach to airborne particles (including fine, sub-micron particles) they are then attracted to each other, making the particulate more easily filterable and increasing capture efficiency. The ions kill pathogens by robbing them of life-sustaining hydrogen. The ions breakdown harmful gases/odors into harmless compounds like O2, CO2, N2, and H2O.

Pathogen awareness and mitigation have become the highest of priorities as it relates to our personal safety and that of our customers and their employees. Currently there is no information available that shows the NPBI has been tested and proven to kill the COVID-19 virus specifically, however, there is still something you can offer:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has enacted a “hierarchy-based” policy, which means that if a company’s product has been found to be effective against harder-to-kill viruses, it is likely to kill a virus like COVID-19.

What type of virus is COVID-19?

Viruses can be generally categorized in three groups by virus structure:
Enveloped viruses – Easiest to kill (Examples: Influenza A and Coronaviruses)
Large, non-enveloped viruses – More difficult to kill (Example: Rotavirus)
Small, non-enveloped viruses – Hardest to kill (Examples: Norovirus and Rhinovir

How does this relate to our new NBPI offering?

The patented NPBI technology being utilized in our Ambient units has a documented kill rate on Norovirus of 93.5% (3rd party testing below).
Since Norovirus is a harder to kill virus than COVID-19, it can be inferred that NPBI technology is likely to kill COVID-19.
Microbiologists have suggested that NPBI technology would kill Coronavirus at a higher rate; however, only testing will confirm.
Testing for effectiveness in killing the COVID-19 virus is currently underway at a 3rd party lab, with results expected by May/June 2020.

Through NPBI, our products purify the air by eliminating airborne particulates, pathogens, and gases/odors.

The patented technology produces ions that travel within the air stream into the occupied spaces, cleaning the air everywhere the ions travel, even in spaces unseen. Since our introduction of these units we have been anxiously awaiting on test results as to exactly how effective this technology will be in killing the COVID-19 virus.

We are happy to report the results…..

In 30 minutes, 99.4% of the viral particles became inactive. Even better news is that this technology is the only one currently on the market that was tested with the actual COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes the COVID-19 illness.

How to Manage Weld Fumes

To stay in compliance with regulations from agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), weld fumes must be managed. OSHA enforces exposure limits for each individual metal, metal oxides or gases found in the weld plume, such as hexavalent chromium and manganese.

To help employers comply with the environmental regulations, a Hierarchy of Controls is provided. This also helps companies drive improvement opportunities. Before companies implement controls, it is recommended to conduct air sampling to understand the types and levels of contaminants in the welding environment.

Using the Hierarchy of Controls, OSHA recommends minimizing weld fume exposure through these steps:

Elimination or Substitution, such as changing the shielding gas
Engineering Controls, such as welding fume extraction equipment
Administrative Controls, such as proper body positioning
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes respiratory protection

We can provide welding fume extraction solutions that are part of the second step in OSHA’s Hierarchy of Controls.

There are a few key things to know about these systems to get the best results.

1. Source capture , which captures and removes contaminants at their source before they reach a worker’s breathing zone, is the preferred method of welding fume extraction. Capture devices are available in different shapes and sizes, and are rated based on the amount of cubic feet of air they extract each minute (cubic feet per minute or cfm). The diameter of the ductwork is directly proportional to the cfm of air that the device can move. A low-vacuum/high-volume fume extraction system will feature larger ductwork and move a larger volume of air but at generally lower vacuum pressures. These systems offer larger capture zones. Conversely, high-vacuum/low-volume systems capture weld fume much closer to the weld, via a smaller attachment, such as a nozzle. The smaller ducting helps get into restricted spaces and removes the fume much closer to the weld itself.

To get the very best results, make sure the capture velocity is sufficient to pull the fume away from the operator’s breathing zone.

Following proper welding procedures and avoiding over welding (putting down more consumable than is necessary) also helps reduce the amount of fume generated, so there is less that must be removed by the welding fume extraction system in the first place.

2. Proper positioning of the fume extraction arm is key to the effectiveness of the system. The hood must be positioned properly so it’s pulling the fume away from the worker’s breathing zone. When using a moveable hood or fume extraction arm, position it above the arc and angle at approximately 45 degrees. The hood distance will vary depending on the velocity and volume of air being captured, though in general it’s approximately the distance of 1 1/2 duct diameters away.

3. Limiting cross ventilation and employing proper body positioning can help the fume extraction arm work in the most effective manner, and proper employee training can help minimize exposure to the weld fume path. Welding operators should position themselves so that the airflow is moving from their back to their front. A cross draft can be used advantageously to blow fume away from the operator and toward the hood, but take care to minimize any detrimental cross drafts. Using partitions or curtains in the welding enclosure can help control cross ventilation.

A welding operator should also avoid positioning his or her body between the weld and fume extraction arm, to keep his or her face out of the weld plume and to prevent blocking the suctioning capabilities of the fume extraction arm.

4. Fume extraction system maintenance is an important part of saving time and money, ensuring the system works to its fullest capacity and helping create a safer environment. Systems are available with disposable filters or with self-cleaning feature models. A good fume extraction system that uses disposable filters should have a gauge to indicate the filter condition. A filter that gets too dirty won’t let as much air pass through, which reduces the amount of airflow at the hood for effective fume collection. When using a self-cleaning fume extraction system, make sure the compressed air line is hooked up and working properly, and that the air is clean and dry. There are numerous types of filters available, and choosing the appropriate filter can help optimize fume collection.
