A Discussion of Fume Extraction Choices for Handheld Laser Welding

A Fume Extractor: A Flexible Solution for Handheld Laser Welding

For shops that need a mobile, economical solution, the ELEVENT Portable Fume Extractor from IAP Air Products is a practical option for light-duty handheld laser welding.

Designed for portability and ease of use, ELEVENT brings fume extraction directly to the workstation without the cost and complexity of a large centralized collection system.

ELEVENT in use in a small shop

ELEVENT Features

  • Approximately 400 CFM measured at the extraction hood
  • 4-inch diameter, 8-foot fume extraction arm
  • 13-inch hood with an air diverter
  • 162 square feet of V-bank main filter media
  • Standard MERV 15 filtration
  • Optional HEPA after-filter
  • Mobile design for flexible workstation placement
  • 120V, single-phase power

With its compact footprint and integrated extraction arm, ELEVENT is well suited for shops that need to move their fume extractor between work areas. Potential applications include maintenance departments, small fabrication shops, technical schools, training facilities and other operations performing intermittent welding.

Choosing the Right Filtration for Laser Welding

ELEVENT comes standard with a MERV 15 V-bank filter, providing a filtration solution for many welding applications. For handheld laser welding, IAP strongly encourages customers to add the optional HEPA after-filter.

For stainless steel laser welding, the HEPA after-filter is required as part of IAP's recommended ELEVENT configuration. The standard MERV 15 filter remains in place as the primary filter, while the HEPA after-filter provides an additional high-efficiency particulate filtration stage.

For other materials, the appropriate filtration configuration depends on the contaminants generated and the requirements of the application. The HEPA after-filter is an important upgrade to consider when selecting a portable laser welding fume extractor.

Fume Arm Filtration: A Practical Option for Dedicated Workstations

Not every laser welding operation needs a mobile unit. For facilities with a dedicated welding bench or a consistent workstation layout, IAP's Fume Arm Filtration (FAF) systems may also be a good option.

FAF combines an industrial fume extraction arm, fan and filtration assembly into a compact source-capture solution. The extraction arm can be positioned near the welding operation to capture fumes before they disperse into the surrounding workspace.

Fume Arm Filtration Features

  • Available with 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch extraction arms
  • Multiple arm lengths to suit different workstation layouts
  • Industrial fan and filtration assembly
  • Standard fire-retardant nanofiber MERV 15 filtration
  • Primary HEPA cartridge option
  • Compact configuration for dedicated work areas

FAF units can be a good fit for small manufacturing facilities, maintenance shops, welding labs and technical education environments where a dedicated extraction point makes sense.

Stainless Steel Laser Welding: Specify the Primary HEPA Cartridge

FAF units come standard with a MERV 15 filter, but IAP requires the primary HEPA cartridge for stainless steel laser welding applications.

Unlike ELEVENT, which uses a MERV 15 primary filter with an optional HEPA after-filter, FAF can be configured with a primary HEPA cartridge in place of its standard MERV 15 filter.

This distinction is important when selecting a fume extraction system for stainless steel. Customers welding stainless steel should specify the primary HEPA cartridge when purchasing an FAF unit.

For other materials, the standard MERV 15 configuration may be appropriate depending on the process and contaminants generated.

Regardless of the filter configuration, proper hood positioning and airflow are essential to capturing fumes at the source.

ELEVENT vs. Fume Arm Filtration: Which Should You Choose?

Both systems provide source-capture fume extraction, but each serves a different need.

Consideration ELEVENT Fume Arm Filtration
Best starting point Mobile, light-duty applications Dedicated workstations
Portability Mobile unit on casters Typically installed at a fixed location
Standard filtration MERV 15 V-bank filter MERV 15 nanofiber cartridge
Stainless steel laser welding MERV 15 primary filter plus HEPA after-filter Primary HEPA cartridge required
Typical environments Small shops, schools, maintenance, intermittent fabrication Welding benches, training stations, dedicated work areas

The best choice depends on the workspace, desired portability and welding process. For stainless steel laser welding, select the appropriate HEPA configuration for the system:

HEPA after-filter for ELEVENT or primary HEPA cartridge for FAF.

Choosing the Right Laser Welding Fume Extraction System

Before selecting an extractor for handheld laser welding, consider the following:

  1. What material are you welding? Stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum and coated metals can produce different airborne contaminants. For stainless steel laser welding, specify the appropriate HEPA configuration.
  2. How often will the system be used? Intermittent training or maintenance work may have different requirements from continuous production.
  3. Will the workstation move? A portable unit can offer more flexibility, while a fixed arm may suit a dedicated bench.
  4. What filtration is included? ELEVENT comes standard with MERV 15 filtration and offers a HEPA after-filter. FAF comes standard with MERV 15 filtration and offers a primary HEPA cartridge.
  5. Can the hood capture fumes effectively? The extraction hood must be positioned appropriately for the welding process, without interfering with the operator or compromising laser safety.

Fire and hot-particle hazards must also be considered when selecting equipment for laser welding. Proper filtration is only one part of an effective fume extraction strategy.
