Cleaner Air, Sharper Skills - Installing the Future of Welding

How IAP is improving air quality in a Trade School

A few weeks ago, IAP-Air Products loaded up the truck and hit the road again for a trip to Mississippi. Our mission: to install a full lineup of our IAP WELDSHELL welding booths and our signature fume extraction arms at a fantastic new trade school. This wasn't just another installation; it was about transforming a workspace into a truly safe and state-of-the-art learning environment.

When we first arrived, it was clear why the school had called us. We walked into a room where students were doing their best to practice their craft, but the air quality was a major concern. They were working in a very polluted air environment, a serious health hazard for anyone, especially new welders spending hours under the hood. It was a perfect reminder of the problem we solve every day.

We wasted no time getting to work. The whole point of our Weld Shell weld booth design is to make installation straightforward, even for a setup this large. The rugged, heavy-duty steel construction is built for the long haul, but it’s engineered to go together fast and simple. Our install team efficiently assembled our products. We laid out the shared-panel configuration, which is a big win for schools because it saves them space and majorly cuts down on cost.

But the real game-changer was getting the fume extraction system installed. After assembling the booths, we proceeded to mount our high-performance Dual Fume Arm Filtration Units - one exhaust snorkel dedicated for every single booth. A welding booth is great for containing light and sparks, but without proper ventilation, it just traps the bad air. Our fume extraction arms tackle that problem head-on, ensuring source capture of all those toxic gases and particulates.

Seeing the difference right away was the most rewarding part of the trip. After the systems were up and running, we could stand on the shop floor and see students welding in a crisp, clean environment, the fume extraction arms eliminating the smog before it even had a chance to rise.  Suddenly, we had gone from a heavily polluted environment to a clean, well-ventilated space. It was incredibly rewarding to see the students working in a clean air environment due to IAP Air Products equipment. The instructors were thrilled, knowing they could focus on teaching welding, not worrying about air quality compliance.

This project in Mississippi is a perfect example of what we do best at IAP Air Products. We don't just sell equipment; we deliver a complete solution that improves safety, enhances training, and protects the health of the students who are going to build our future. It was a tough, satisfying few days of work for us, and we left knowing that those students are starting their careers with the absolute best and safest setup possible.

Ready to see what the next generation of welders can do when they have the proper safety equipment? I know we are!

When evaluating a welding fume extractor, it’s easy to be drawn to large CFM numbers. What often isn’t clear is where that airflow is measured. In many cases, those numbers are tied to motor ratings, not the airflow available at the hood where fume capture actually occurs. This article helps explain this.
