HEPA Filtration

Do I Need a HEPA Filter for My Fume Extractor?

When it comes to keeping your shop air clean, choosing the right fume extractor setup is key.

But one question we often hear is: “Do I really need a HEPA filter?”

The short answer — it depends on what you’re welding or grinding.

What Does a HEPA Filter Do?

HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are designed to capture very fine particles - down to 0.3 microns with 99.97% efficiency. In fume extraction systems, this means trapping the smallest and most hazardous particles that pass through the primary filters, helping ensure the cleanest possible return air.

When a HEPA Filter Is Needed?

For many general welding applications — such as mild steel — a standard multi-stage filtration system with a primary spark arrestor and secondary filter is typically sufficient. However, there are specific cases where a HEPA filter becomes critical, including:

  • Stainless Steel Welding: Produces hexavalent chromium, a known carcinogen that requires HEPA-level filtration for compliance and safety.
  • Galvanized Steel Welding: Emits zinc oxide fumes that can irritate the lungs and cause metal fume fever.
  • Aluminum Welding: Creates fine particulates that can bypass standard filters.
  • Applications in Sensitive Environments: Educational labs, research facilities, or areas with strict air quality standards often require HEPA filtration regardless of metal type.

In short, if you’re dealing with toxic metals, fine particulate matter, or regulatory compliance, adding a HEPA filter is a smart move.

Benefits of Using a HEPA Filter

  • Improved air quality and worker safety
  • Compliance with OSHA and NIOSH air quality standards
  • Peace of mind when working around sensitive or enclosed environments

IAP Air Products’ Fume Extractors with HEPA Options

At IAP Air Products, we offer HEPA filtration as an available option on both our ELEVENT Portable Fume Extractor and our MFE Series Mobile Fume Extractors.

These systems are designed for efficiency, reliability, and easy maintenance — perfect for shops that need on-the-go air cleaning without sacrificing performance. Whether you’re capturing weld fumes, grinding dust or other airborne contaminants, our mobile fume extractors can be configured to meet your filtration needs — including HEPA when required.

When evaluating a welding fume extractor, it’s easy to be drawn to large CFM numbers. What often isn’t clear is where that airflow is measured. In many cases, those numbers are tied to motor ratings, not the airflow available at the hood where fume capture actually occurs. This article helps explain this.
